Deadbeat Girl expands their sound with new release ‘Soft’
New York-based artist Deadbeat Girl (Val Olson) returns with their new single, ‘Soft,’ co-written with Chloe Lilac and produced by Chris Petrosino and Rob McCurdy of Noiseclub. The track highlights Deadbeat Girl’s evolving sound and candid lyricism in a polished alternative style.
‘Soft’ merges purring guitars with airy, emotive vocals as Deadbeat Girl directly addresses societal expectations and gender stereotypes. The track clearly centers on the struggle for vulnerability and authenticity, pushing back against rigid ideas of masculinity while advocating for emotional freedom. Its rich production and understated hooks highlight a growing confidence and maturity in Deadbeat Girl’s songwriting.
Sharing more, they explained:
“I was once in a relationship where my partner at the time made me feel like I was too soft or not masculine enough. They felt I was “not aggressive enough” or “too emotional”. I feel like a common experience for masculine presenting non-men is the expectation to act within the negative stereotypes of a cis-man in society. Sometimes we are expected to be emotionless, angry, aggressive, and big/strong but that is not what should be expected of anyone. People should be able to be who they are without feeling sorry or explaining themselves.
“Be who you are and don’t let fuckin anyone tell you otherwise! Crying is cool, I promise.”
‘Soft’ is available now on all streaming platforms.
We’ve covered Monster Machine previously: ‘Everything You Wanted,’ ‘Talk Tonight,’ ‘When You Went,’ ‘These Walls‘ and ‘More.’
