Indie/Electronic duo pecq releases new EP red moon, rare night
London-based indie-electronic duo pecq unveil their latest musical endeavor with the release of their new single ‘in the dark’ and accompanying EP red moon, rare night, both available now via their Upcycled Sounds imprint.
Produced by: Oli Bayton
Comprised of Hannah (Jakes) Jacobs and Nicholas (Nikò) O’Brien, known for their collaborative and touring work with acts like Arlo Parks and Porij, pecq offers a captivating blend of experimental electronic and meditative songwriting. Drawing inspiration from artists like Boards Of Canada, Ultraísta, Sampha, and Caribou, red moon, rare night traverses choppy dance beats, twisting alt-pop melodies, and blissful ambient textures. Lyrically, the EP explores themes of isolation, queer identity, medical trauma, emigration, relationships, and distance, reflecting the complexities of contemporary life.
New single, ‘in the dark,’ delves into the experience of falling for someone avoidant, capturing the emptiness, and the longing that can accompany situationships. With its real drums morphing into glitchy samples, classic synth tones, and soft piano, the track embodies pecq’s signature blend of electronic and indie influences.
Speaking more on the track’s inspiration, Jakes said:
“I’ve been on both sides of the situationship vibe and they’re isolating in their own way – one cos you’re chasing an unattainable version of someone and the other cos you can’t let someone in. So it’s not a rage-y situationship revenge song, it’s about that empty feeling at the end of the night when you wanted to feel closer to someone but just feel more alone.”
Written and produced across different time zones, the EP reflects the duo’s remote collaboration process while on tour with other projects. The resulting music carries a certain darkness and isolation, influenced by late-night studio sessions and introspective exploration.
Jakes explains:
“Normally we write pretty closely together, but for this EP both of us were touring a lot with other projects so it was a super remote process – done in hotel rooms in the middle of the night or in the back of a van driving through the dark.”
They go on to say:
“We were passing sessions and voice notes around for most of the year and it’s been cool to clearly hear each person’s stamp on the session – but honestly nothing got finished until we were both back in the same studio. You can hear those after-hours vibes in the music – a lot of it is set at night and the production’s got a darkness and isolation to it.”
red moon, rare night also features previously released singles ‘closer,’ a cavernous exploration of glitchy indie-electronica, and ‘out loud,’ a skittering electro-pop track. Bookended by two pieces of serene ambience, the EP showcases pecq’s versatility and sonic experimentation.
pecq’s new EP red moon, rare night and their latest single ‘in the dark’ are available now.
