London electronic duo, pecq, sets the stage for their upcoming EP, red moon, rare night, with the release of their latest single ‘Closer.’

A mesmerizing exploration into electro-pop and meditative indie-electronica, ‘Closer’ delves into the psychological impact of distance between loved ones, weaving glitchy textures and pulsating 8-bit style synth lines into an immersive sonic experience.

Jakes, the vocalist and producer, reflects on the song’s origins, stating:

“‘Closer’ is about distance. It was so freeing and inspiring to visit places I never thought I’d see, but after a few months, I struggled being away from my friends and trying to finish songs with Nikò being in an opposite time zone. So ‘Closer’ was originally about isolation but it was finished on the plane trip home, so a different mood crept in – getting closer to your besties, coming home full of fresh things to share.”

Refusing to rely on sample banks, pecq takes pride in crafting their own sounds, drawing inspiration from unconventional sources such as ants attacking microphones, snares played through prepared speakers, and oil-drums dragged across warehouse floors. The duo emphasizes the importance of stripping down their music to its core, often reducing it to piano and drums to ensure the song works at its most basic level.

The pair went on to say:

“Our hard-drives are full of recordings of ants attacking tiny microphones, snares played through prepared speakers, oil-drums dragged across huge warehouse floors, recordings of parties, contact-microphones on suspension bridges… There’s always a new sound to inspire a new song but for us the writing process also involves moving away from all the studio wizardry and boiling it down to piano and drums. Just being a couple of musicians in a room is essential to know if the song works at its most basic level. It can be a long frustrating process but we wouldn’t have it any other way.”

pecq will release new EP red moon, rare night in March via Upcycled Sounds. New single ‘Closer’ is out now.
