English rock band The Coral have released their first single of 2023, ‘Wild Bird.’

Follow-up to their widely-acclaimed 2021 double album, The Coral have announced plans to release two studio albums in 2023.

The initial release, Coral Island, is scheduled for September 8, 2023. The subsequent album, Holy Joe’s Coral Island Medicine Show, will arrive shortly afterward, with the exact date yet to be announced. These two albums combine to create, in the words of the band, a “surreal Italian spaghetti western soundtrack.”

‘Wild Bird,’ the film’s opening theme and first single off the album, is laced with deft string arrangements courtesy of the album’s co-producer, Sean O’Hagan (The High Llamas, Stereolab) who was welcomed into The Coral fold as one of a number of guests and collaborators featured across Sea Of Mirrors’ 13-tracks.

James Skelly says of ‘Wild Bird’:

“Like most of The Coral’s best-known songs you could pick out, it was written in about five minutes. Once the album concept was clear, this was us imagining the theme tune for an Italian western directed by Fellini with a Richard Yates-written script. It’s us asking ourselves: what would have happened if Lee Hazlewood had produced a Gene Pitney song written by Townes Van Zandt?”

‘Wild Bird’ is out today. Sea Of Mirrors is set for release later this year on Friday, September 8, 2023. Holy Joe’s Coral Island Medicine Show, will follow shortly after with the date to be determined.
