The Flaming Lips with Nell Smith, have announced Where The Viaduct Looms, an album of Nick Cave covers with Nell Smith on lead vocals.

Produced by: The Flaming Lips

This isn’t the first time we’ve covered Nell Smith. We were first introduced to her music earlier in 2021 through her father, Jude Smith. At the time we were completely blown away (and still are) at the level of Nell’s skill set. Through her dad we learned about Nell’s backstory and how everything came together. And quite a story it is… At the time we wrote about Nell’s introduction to the world of music and the opportunity she had, “A rare collaboration has come to fruition for 14-year-old Nell Smith of Fernie BC, Canada. Nell has had the unique experience of working with one of the premier bands in the industry today, The Flaming Lips.”

The Flaming Lips and Nell have released their second Nick Cave cover, ‘The Ship Song’. It’s a minimalistic affair like the original. The song does seem to take on a new meaning with a 14-year-old at the helm. Replete with The Flaming Lips styled soundscape and Dave Fridmann mastering the track (and album), the song fits right into the band’s discography and further establishes Nell as a force to be reckoned with.

Where the Viaduct Looms, will be released on Bella Union / [PIAS] and was mastered by Dave Fridmann at Tarbox Road Studios.
