A rare collaboration has come to fruition for 14-year-old Nell Smith of Fernie BC, Canada. Nell has had the unique experience of working with one of the premier bands in the industry today, The Flaming Lips. And today marks the first of many highlights for this young budding artist, her first single has hit streaming services. ‘Girl In Amber’ is a cover of Nick Cave’s 2016 song of the same name.

The three-time Grammy Award winner Coyne was astonished by Nell’s enthusiasm and creativity during the process. Coyne said “It is always great to meet excited, young creative people. With Nell, we could see she is on a journey and thought it would be fun to join her for a while and see if we could get things going. It was a great way to connect with her and help harness her cool attitude to making music.”

When asked about the experience, Nell said: “I still really can’t believe it, it was hard to get through all the songs, but Wayne was so encouraging when I was struggling with a few of them that I kept going. It was a really steep learning curve.”

Eclectic ✅. Reflective ✅. Atmospheric ✅. Psychedelic Rock ✅. It’s everything you expect from The Flaming Lips but packaged around a 14-year-old from Fernie BC, Canada. It’s a beautiful rendition that left us in awe and reminded us of how beautiful the world can be when a rare opportunity is seized.

Nell’s debut album, Where the Viaduct Looms is due out in October. The album explores 9 Nick Cave songs with Nell on vocals and instrumentation with additional instrumentation and production by The Flaming Lips. The collection of songs was mastered by Dave Fridmann at Tarbox Road Studios.

Where the Viaduct Looms is set for release on October 25th 2021.
