The group also announces upcoming EP Stop Looking At Me Like That, set for a June release.

Moon Tide Gallery, the brainchild of 23-year-old Baltimore producer, singer, and multi-instrumentalist Mason Gainer, has released their latest single, ‘Venus Fly Trap,’ alongside the announcement of their forthcoming EP, Stop Looking at Me Like That, set to be released in June.

Marking an evolutionary phase for the project, Moon Tide Gallery is no longer a solo endeavor, with Gainer exploring a more lush and intricate sound, aided by Baltimore-based producer notcharles (known for his work with Future Islands’ Samuel T. Herring and Tiberius B), who also serves as Gainer’s co-songwriter across the new EP.

‘Venus Fly Trap,’ the lead single from the upcoming EP, offers an intoxicating blend of restless percussion and enveloping atmospheric flourishes. Gainer’s agitated vocals pierce through, as the song navigates themes of self-destruction amidst influences from alternative indie, psychedelia, and noise-pop.

Speaking on the song’s lyrical inspiration, Gainer said:

“‘Venus Fly Trap’ was written during a time of self-destruction where I began to recognize the deterioration of all my connections with people. Ultimately it’s about running away, and no matter how far you go you end up where you started. Back to the same sheets, sipping out the same glass, inside the same venus fly trap.”

Moon Tide Gallery’s upcoming EP, Stop Looking at Me Like That, captures hazy nights, lost loves, and uncertain futures against the backdrop of Baltimore’s soundscape. Utilizing elements such as street conversations, ambient audio, and environmental sounds like sirens and trains, the EP offers an immersive atmosphere that delves into the psyche of a haunted protagonist.

Shedding light on the creative process behind the EP and collaboration with notcharles, Gainer said:

“When working on the EP, our primary focus was on crafting an immersive atmosphere. We approached each track with a folk-style foundation centered on vocals and acoustic guitar and then built on it layer by layer. We incorporated recorded conversations, ambient audio, snippets of videos, and even environmental sounds like sirens and trains to create the overall effect.”

Moon Tide Gallery’s new single ‘Venus Fly Trap’ is out now, with the EP Stop Looking at Me Like That slated for release in June.
