Oakland’s Day Wave releases his first single of 2021
Oakland singer/songwriter Jackson Phillips (Day Wave) releases ‘Before We Knew.’
One of Oakland’s most promising indie projects, Day Wave is back releasing music. Today, Jackson Phillips (Day Wave) has released his first single of 2021, ‘Before We Knew.’
‘Before We Knew’ comes on the heels of his third EP, 2020’s ‘Crush.’ Jackson notes, “I wrote ‘Before We Knew’ last fall after taking a long break from writing songs. When I sat down to create again, I knew I wanted to let go of my old process, I wanted to make music feel fresh for myself again.”
And Day Wave’s latest does not disappoint. ‘Before We Knew’ continues in his dreamy, atmospheric, ‘80s-influenced vibe. Albeit at a slowed-down pace. The steady emotional vocals take over the song right out of the gate reinforcing the journey Phillips takes you on. And it’s in the hook where ‘Before We Knew’ really shines, “Call you back again and I don’t believe you, I don’t believe you. I feel like tapping out but. I can’t let you beat me. I won’t go alone.”
The video directed by Jason Lester (Rostam, Cautious Clay, Pedro The Lion) is one continuous shot and highlights the isolation behind the song. “With this video we liked the idea of filming it in one single shot, mirroring the stream of consciousness lyrical style of the song,” Jackson says. “Shooting on 16mm film heightened the feeling of spontaneity, only having a couple of takes to get it right.”
Day Wave first emerged in 2015 when Phillips began releasing a series of singles and EPs. To keep up with Day Wave check out their links below.
