Known for his role in The Wrens, Charles Bissell embarks on a new musical odyssey with Car Colors, introducing their debut single ‘Old Death.’

Car Colors, the new musical venture by Charles Bissell, formerly of The Wrens, makes a striking debut today with their highly anticipated single, ‘Old Death.’ Released both on 12-inch vinyl and digitally via Absolutely Kosher Records, this marks Bissell’s first new music in 20 years, setting the stage for his return to the music scene.

The debut single arrives alongside B-sides ‘And It’s All Guns and Arrows (alt. take)’ and ‘I’ll Bear,’ the former being an alternate take of a track featured in Car Colors’ forthcoming album set for an early 2024 release.

Speaking about the single, Bissell provides a compelling narrative behind its creation:

“‘Old Death’ is, like the rest of the album, sort of a sequel to The Meadowlands before it and like that one, is about time, how one chooses to spend it, what those choices cost. That means for me, the song (and album) is also about making the album itself.”

In an accompanying video directed by Kyle Garrett, Bissell delves further into the song’s conceptualization, emphasizing its ties to both mortality and his personal journey:

“It’s about death, maybe obviously, but it’s really about my dumb life.”

With a narrative interwoven with the thread of Odyssey, Bissell draws parallels between his own experiences and the epic tale:

“However like Ulysses, every song is written in a stream-of-consciousness mode. Or for me, really more of a stream-of-memories: that time this happened, that other-time-this-reminds-me-of happened etc.”

The trio of tracks showcases Bissell’s signature songwriting style, intricate soundscapes, and meticulous production. ‘Old Death’ spans over seven minutes, offering a layered journey of chiming dissonance and gradual urgency. Meanwhile, ‘And It’s All Guns And Arrows (alt. take)” and ‘I’ll Bear’ display a blend of melancholy and exuberant guitar interplay, ensuring a captivating musical experience.

This debut marks a long-awaited return and sets high expectations for Car Colors’ forthcoming album. For more information on the ‘Old Death’ single, including hi-res images and artwork, visit the official website.
