Buffalo Nichols announces new album The Fatalist / Releases lead single ‘You’re Gonna Need Somebody On Your Bond’
Milwaukee, WI-based Buffalo Nichols has announced his anticipated new album The Fatalist will be released on September 15th, 2023 via Fat Possum.
Buffalo Nichols has released an updated version of Blind Willie Johnson’s original ‘You’re Gonna Need Somebody On Your Bond’ from December 1930. The updated version may lack the gruff voice of Blind Willie Johnson, but the track can certainly stand shoulder to shoulder with its predecessor.
Nichols explains:
“A traditional song made modern. Which aspects of ‘the Blues’ are essential? Is it a melody? A certain vocabulary? Delivery? Instrumentation? Is this still a blues song? And most importantly: who gets to decide? I tried to reimagine the blues with this song as if it were allowed to grow and progress uninterrupted, uncolonized, and ungentrified.”
‘You’re Gonna Need Somebody On Your Bond’ is available today. The Fatalist is out September 15, 2023, via Fat Possum.
