Alexei Shishkin channels poet Carl Dennis on vivid new single ‘Ode to Carl Dennis’

Prolific indie songwriter and filmmaker Alexei Shishkin returns with ‘Ode to Carl Dennis,’ the third single from his upcoming album Good Times, out September 5 via Rue Defense.
Inspired by the titular poet, ‘Ode to Carl Dennis’ draws directly from Dennis’ poem ‘At Home With Cézanne,’ reimagining its characters in a slightly different, parallel universe. Shishkin, who has been dubbed a “restless lo-fi chameleon,” delivers the track with his signature blend of slacker rock ease and lyrical nuance. The single follows ‘Disco Elysium‘ and ‘Tiki Taka (2006).’
“This one was inspired by Carl Dennis, a favorite poet of mine. He has a poem called ‘At Home With Cézanne’ that I had read the night before and really enjoyed. Again, Brad and I wrote the bulk of the music first, and then I fit lyrics to the music. I couldn’t find the text of the poem anywhere online, so here’s a picture of it. I took his characters, but tried to re-imagine them in a slightly different, parallel universe.”
Good Times was recorded from scratch in just four days at Big Nice Studio in Lincoln, Rhode Island, with producer Bradford Krieger. Shishkin describes the record as “a collage of spur-of-the-moment inspiration” and an “escape from reality,” blending Americana, jazz, and slacker rock.
