Scheduled for release on March 25th to coincide with the Worm Moon‘s peak illumination, Magana’s second album, Teeth, is a sonic exploration through the dark corridors of the heart and mind.

Produced by: Jeni Magaña

A true sonic alchemist, Magana’s music defies easy categorization, weaving together elements of self-described witchy rock with ghost pop, acid folk, and alt-pop with effortless grace. Drawing inspiration from her eclectic influences, which include Torres, St. Vincent, Sharon Van Etten, and Andy Shauf, Magana creates a mesmerizing soundscape that is at once familiar and otherworldly.

Born in Bakersfield, CA, and educated at Boston’s Berklee College of Music, Magana’s musical journey has taken her from the bustling streets of Brooklyn to the sun-soaked shores of Los Angeles. Along the way, she has honed her craft as a bassist for acclaimed artists like Mitski and Lady Lamb, gaining invaluable experience that informs her singular approach to songwriting.

With Teeth, Magana delves deep into the recesses of the human experience, exploring themes of vulnerability, self-acceptance, and existential longing. From the haunting melodies of ‘Girl in Chains’ to the introspective depth of ‘Beside You,’ every track on the album serves as a profound reflection on the complexities of the human experience.

Here’s Magana discussing the album:

“I recorded this during lockdown in the pandemic. The world started to look strange to me as if I was an alien plopped down in the middle of Los Angeles but with all these human feelings. I wanted this album to reflect that not only in the lyrics but in the soundscapes as well. I wanted it to sound like earth and space at the same time, so I arranged acoustic guitars, strings, and winds to weave in and out of synth lines and electric guitar solos.”

In ‘Break Free,’ a standout track from the album, Magana demonstrates her skill in crafting immersive sonic landscapes that blur the lines between reality and dreams. Against a backdrop of shimmering guitars and ethereal synths, her vocals soar with a raw intensity that is both haunting and hypnotic.

Throughout Teeth, Magana’s finely-tuned instrumentation creates an immersive listening experience that is intimate, as much as it is expansive. From the plaintive strumming of acoustic guitars to the lush orchestration of strings and winds, each element is carefully crafted to evoke a sense of depth and emotion.

As the album draws to a close with the hauntingly beautiful ‘Girl In Chains,’ it becomes clear that Teeth is proof of the power of music to heal and transform. With its celestial melodies, evocative lyrics, and all-consuming production, Magana’s latest offering is a delightful 14-track project sure to resonate with listeners.

Teeth was recorded in the comforts of Magna’s home in Los Angeles. Mixing was done by Jonathan Smith (her husband and drummer) while the mastering was completed by Michael Disanto.
