The Swell Season shares ‘Great Weight’ ahead of first album in 16 years

The Swell Season has released ‘Great Weight,’ the fourth single from their upcoming album Forward, which is now scheduled to arrive on July 11, 2025, due to vinyl manufacturing delays.
Moody and rhythmic, ‘Great Weight’ is a striking meditation on emotional release. The song captures the feeling of shedding unnecessary burdens and embracing a sense of clarity in the aftermath of personal storms. Co-written by Glen Hansard and Markéta Irglová, the track arrives alongside a video co-directed by Irglová and Sturla Mio Thorisson, offering a visual complement to the song’s introspective weight and swelling energy.
Hansard explains:
“This song is about throwing off the weight and burdens of unnecessary struggle. It’s a take stock moment. A kind of report from the centre of a clearing storm. It’s violent, but one knows it’s gonna leave one at a new beginning. Any way the wind blows. I shall roam. Every direction is suddenly available.”
‘Great Weight’ follows previously released singles ‘Factory Street Bells,’ ‘Stuck In Reverse,’ and ‘People We Used To Be.’ All four tracks will appear on Forward, The Swell Season’s first full-length album since 2009’s Strict Joy. Produced by Thorisson and recorded at Masterkey Studios in Iceland, the album sees Hansard and Irglová reuniting creatively after years of solo projects.
