The Notwist release their new single ‘How the Story Ends’, offering a jangly cover of the original song by Georgia band Lovers ahead of their upcoming album News from Planet Zombie, due out March 13, 2026, via Morr Music.

On ‘How the Story Ends,’ the Munich-based group reworks Lovers’ folky original into a brisk, clacking arrangement that leans into rhythmic guitars and buoyant momentum. The song balances lightness with emotional weight, fitting seamlessly into the band’s long-standing approach to thoughtful, exploratory pop music. While The Notwist are not widely known for covers, this version feels fully integrated into their sonic world, emphasizing melody and forward motion without losing the reflective core of the original.

The band explains their choice of the song:

“We chose ‘How the story ends’ because we really love the song and the Lovers… it has a great energy, melody and lyrics and is really fun to play and sing. When I first heard the demo-version, ‘Honea,’ on a Kill-Rockstars-compilation, I played the song in an endless loop until I could sing along all the lyrics. And also as the other cover-version on the album is by Neil Young and has a more romantic view on relationships, we thought it is good to have this song as a sort of counterpart.”

The Notwist will support the release with an extensive European tour throughout 2026, including dates in Vienna, London, Paris, Berlin, Munich, and Istanbul.

‘How the Story Ends’ is out now and available to stream on all major platforms.
