New York songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Stephen Becker released his new single ‘Bad Idea’ via the label One Is Three. The track serves as the lead single and video for his upcoming fourth full-length album, Gravity Blanket, which is scheduled for release on April 24.

‘Bad Idea’ features Becker’s voice floating above shimmering acoustic guitars and spacious drums, creating a sound that blends homespun indie rock with the elastic production of contemporary art-pop. The single explores themes of breakups and the difficulty of personal transformation through a musical arrangement that gradually blooms with harmonies, piano, and synthesizers. The production moves from a deceptively simple structure into a dense sonic landscape as it examines whether people can truly break free from long-standing routines.

Becker shared that:

“‘Bad Idea’ is about a breakup I went through after seeing the ballet—the haunting feeling of the dancers’ movements lingering in my mind, the sad-sweet taste of spiked lemonade on the train ride home. I was thinking about, and trying to manifest, change with a newfound determination to break free from unhealthy routines and patterns in life and in love.”

‘Bad Idea’ is available now on all streaming platforms.

We’ve covered Stephen Becker previously: ‘The Answer featuring Taylor Vick,’ ‘I Held An Echo.’
