Sophia Kennedy confronts grief and illusion on ‘Imaginary Friend’

Baltimore-born, Hamburg/Berlin-based artist Sophia Kennedy returns with her latest single, ‘Imaginary Friend,’ a striking preview of her upcoming album Squeeze Me, out May 23rd via City Slang Records.
The track, described by Kennedy as a “pop song” that has undergone many transformations, explores the psychological and emotional terrain of grief, identity, and acceptance. Stripped down compared to her previous work, ‘Imaginary Friend’ is carried by repetitive piano chords, steady drum-machine beats, and Kennedy’s rich vocal delivery. It finds her casting off the illusion of a constructed persona—what she calls an “imagined idea of a person”—and embracing a raw, unfiltered reality. This minimalist yet emotionally potent approach aligns with the broader sonic and lyrical themes of Squeeze Me, an album that reflects on interpersonal relationships, power dynamics, and self-determination.
‘Imaginary Friend’ is out now.
