Irish shoegaze artist Silk returns with the lush and expansive new single ‘but then, yes,’ pushing deeper into the genre’s heavier textures while retaining its signature emotional core. The project of Virgins guitarist and songwriter Michael Smyth, Silk builds on the promise of debut single ‘Faze.’

On ‘but then, yes,’ Smyth crafts a sound that alternates between dense, crushing walls of distortion and delicate, dreamlike passages. The track swells toward a climactic crescendo, marked by soaring layers of guitar and the ethereal guest vocals of AJ Das (of Dublin’s Picture Postcard). The result is a sonic journey that evokes both catharsis and introspection, tapping into the raw intensity that defines the best of modern shoegaze.

The impetus for the project is described by Michael:

“I constantly feel like I am rushing towards the inevitable infinite oblivion. Further exacerbated by the marking of years spent circling the sun. To that end, it’s important that I fill the time remaining with joyous, creative acts. The sharing of ideas is an essential part of that, which brings us to Silk.”

Mixed by longtime collaborator Jonny Woods (1980 Something Studios, Wynona Bleach) and mastered by Jon Moorehead of Moosetronix, ‘but then, yes’ is out now.
