Australian new wave/post-punk band Radio Free Alice has premiered their latest single, ‘Toyota Camry,’ a bright, 80s-infused track that captures the feeling of being haunted by the past while facing an uncertain future.

‘Toyota Camry’ features shimmering guitars and vintage-style backing vocals that recall classic 80s new wave, while its lyrical themes reflect a tension between nostalgia and the desire to move forward. Vocalist Noah Learmonth reveals the song was inspired by a phrase from author Mark Fisher: “everyone is bored but nothing is boring.” The band recorded the track with producer Peter Katis (Interpol, Bloc Party) in a house filled with faded Polaroids of legendary bands, a fitting setting for a song about “lost futures, haunted by the past.”

“We recorded it with Peter Katis (Interpol, Bloc Party, Frightened Rabbit) in Connecticut in a house that resembled the one in ‘Monster House’, a horror movie for kids about a haunted house I watched growing up. Around the house were scattered Polaroids of other bands Peter had recorded albums with, legendary bands, like Interpol. Constantly stumbling across these fading Polaroids in the cutlery drawer or whatever in the old wooden house felt weirdly fitting for the song — the song’s about lost futures, haunted by the past.”

‘Toyota Camry’ is out now.
