Photay unveils expansive new single ‘Jet Stream’
Electronic producer and multi-instrumentalist Photay (Evan Shornstein) returns with ‘Jet Stream,’ the first of two new tracks featured on Windswept: Expansions, an extended edition of his acclaimed album Windswept, set for release on March 28 via Mexican Summer.
‘Jet Stream’ takes Windswept’s dynamic sound even further, soaring into atmospheric heights with an energy that was, quite literally, too much for vinyl. The track leans into Photay’s blend of IDM, ambient techno, and jazz-inflected electronic textures, evoking the unpredictability and force of natural elements. A rush of layered synths, intricate rhythms, and weightless melodies create a sense of movement that feels untamed and intentional, capturing the spirit of the wind that inspired the original album.
Shornstein explains:
“Pushing past the dynamic ceiling of Windswept, ‘Jet Stream’ peaks in our upper atmosphere, and as a result, it didn’t fit on vinyl. At the start of 2025, on the other side of Windswept tours, I lost my home and studio to the devastating wildfires in Los Angeles. Although this piece (and Windswept) were made well before this disaster, for me they grow in relevance. I use sound to understand the greater elemental forces and our vulnerability to them. I believe music will continue being a source of uplift and clarity amidst intensifying weather and atmospheric conditions.”
Alongside the expanded album’s release, Photay will bring his dynamic live performance to London’s Polygon Live LDN Festival on May 3. Windswept: Expansions serves as both a continuation and evolution of Photay’s sonic world, further exploring the intersection of music, nature, and human resilience.
