The West Irish noise-punk band offers a visceral portrait of collapse with second single from new EP.

West Irish noise-punk outfit Nerves have unleashed their searing new single ‘Takes A Second,’ the latest preview of their forthcoming EP Iarmhaireacht, arriving August 15, 2025. Produced by Daniel Fox of Gilla Band, the track marks a bold escalation in the group’s sound, blending elements of noise rock, electronic minimalism, and raw emotional turmoil.

‘Takes A Second’ opens with looped guitar static that slowly metastasizes into a wall of sonic chaos, mirroring the unraveling of a romantic relationship in its final stages. The song balances restraint and release, channeling tension into a cathartic sonic collapse. Fox’s production captures both the bleak intimacy of the subject matter and the brutal energy of the band’s performance.

Vocalist Kyle Thornton explains:

“It’s the death knell of a romantic relationship – the acceptance that the bond now exists on borrowed time.”

Lyrically and conceptually, Iarmhaireacht is deeply rooted in Irish history and identity. The EP integrates archival audio samples—from folklore and podcasts to old TV broadcasts—to underscore the ongoing relevance of social and economic struggles in modern Ireland. The band’s embrace of Irish culture is visible in every aspect of the project, from the use of Ogham script and traditional wren boys’ costumes to Irish-language interludes.

‘Takes A Second’ is out now.
