Birmingham’s post-punk trio Mutes is back with a bang as they share a taste of their upcoming fourth studio album set to release on May 17th, 2024.

Out now, ‘Transparency’ tackles Western civilization’s avoidance of acknowledging the inevitability of death, intertwined with dream-diary recollections of burnt human remains strewn down an infinite highway. Recorded almost entirely live, the track serves as a concentrated dose of intoxicating krautrock, adorned with surrealistic musings on the ephemeral nature of the human form.

Discussing the track, James says:

“‘Transparency’ was one of the last songs written for the record, but it was immediately apparent that it would become the opening track – it has a sense of purpose that encapsulates our work ethic. Lyrically it handles Western civilisation’s persistent avoidance of acknowledging the inevitability of death – that the most we can hope for is that the fatal decline is as drawn-out as possible (interspersed with dream-diary recollections of burnt human remains strewn down an infinite highway – pretty jovial stuff).”

Mutes’ upcoming 12-track fourth album, …buried where you stand, promises to be their most raw and engrossing record to date. Recorded almost entirely live as a three-piece at Megatone Studios, the album sees the band stripping back their sound to focus on unfiltered immediacy while further refining their ambiguous, genre-defying sonics.

‘Transparency’ is out today. Their upcoming fourth studio album, …buried where you stand, is set to release on May 17th, 2024.
