Mal Blum unveils bittersweet breakup anthem ‘Must Get Lonely’

Mal Blum has shared a new single and video titled ‘Must Get Lonely,’ a sharp yet tender track from their upcoming album The Villain, out now via Get Better Records.
‘Must Get Lonely’ explores the surreal aftermath of a breakup, painting the ex as an archangel delivering one final message—via commercial airplane, not divine flight. This mix of everyday absurdity and mythic storytelling, paired with Blum’s signature dry humor and restrained melancholy, gives the song a unique emotional depth. Directed by Liz Charky, the accompanying video mirrors the song’s narrative, casting light on both the pain of the recipient and the burden of the messenger.
On the track, Blum shares:
“The song is obviously about a tense relationship conversation. My intention was to inject an element of mythic absurdism into the story by using the imagery of the archangel traveling via aircraft to deliver bad news. I also felt compelled to explore the psyches of both messenger and receiver.”
‘Must Get Lonely’ is the second single from The Villain, Blum’s first full-length release in five years. The album takes a probing look at morality, queerness, and cultural perception through 11 textured indie rock tracks shaped by producer Jessica Boudreaux, along with bandmates Audrey Zee Whitesides and Ricardo Lagomasino. Beyond heartbreak, The Villain wrestles with broader questions of identity, misperception, and self-acceptance—especially from Blum’s trans-masculine and non-binary lens.
‘Must Get Lonely’ is out now.
