M. Vaughan captivates with emotive indie electronic single ‘Cold Read’

The track serves as a compelling preview of Vaughan’s forthcoming EP, Keep in Touch, slated for release on June 14th.
As the follow-up to April’s ‘Tire Swing,’ ‘Cold Read’ continues Vaughan’s trajectory towards a more introspective and emotionally resonant musical landscape. Departing from the club-centric sounds of his previous work, Vaughan delves deeper into the indie influences that shaped his musical journey, drawing inspiration from his roots in bands and his immersion in electronic music production.
In a statement about the track, Vaughan reveals:
“I wrote ‘Cold Read’ here in Lisbon in February 2024. My mom, who lives in Vermont, was auditioning for this play and we would Facetime and review her script and mark it up together and I was really rooting for her. At the same time, I was sober and life was good and clean and rote and I just wanted to knock over a pedestrian to give things some color again. The synth solo at the end was this massive cathartic release for me, I recorded it about 20 times, shoved it through a guitar amp, triple-tracked it, processed the hell out of it. I really had a blast making this one.”
Reflecting on the thematic essence of his upcoming EP, Vaughan shares:
“This record is about these past few years of transition, trying to reckon with my own musical roots while making sense of life abroad, and eventually landing in a new place and making it home…The songs on this record are a fusion of my experience as a dance music producer and rock songwriter. Compared to True Life, my last LP as M. Vaughan, they’re more songs than tracks. Even if they have more of a pop structure, I couldn’t help but bust out the synthesizers and fuck up some samples—I use the tools of electronic music to make rock songs.”
‘Cold Read’ is out now. Vaughan’s forthcoming EP, Keep in Touch, is slated for release on June 14th.
