Grumpy, the NYC-based project led by Heaven Schmitt, has unveiled a compelling new single titled ‘Bird Parts,’ featuring Harmony Tividad (formerly of Girlpool). The track arrives as the second preview from Grumpy’s upcoming EP Piebald, due out September 26th via Bayonet Records.

Following the bright shimmer of lead single ‘Crush,’ ‘Bird Parts’ reveals the shadowy undercurrent of the Piebald narrative. Opening in dream-pop territory before descending into a cathartic nu-metal-tinged bridge, the track is as emotionally raw as it is sonically experimental. Crafted alongside Grumpy bassist and creative director Anya Good, the single also arrives with a gripping, self-directed video that matches the song’s sense of fragmentation and emotional unraveling.

“In the timeline of the Piebald story, ‘Bird Parts’ was the second-to-last song written. After the complicated excitement of Crush, the denial of Deeptalker, the last-ditch hope of Proud of You, and the devastation of Knot, Bird Parts is my unraveling.

“I was living in Chicago, realizing I was accepting crumbs and I didn’t know why. My husband and I were hanging by a thread, and the girl I loved didn’t want me, she wanted my husband. I wrote Bird Parts about that painful proximity to the thing I wanted: “my girl isn’t mine, I’m a bottom feeder / I can’t kiss her but she calls me when I really need her.” I was settling for being near her love, but not the recipient of it.”

‘Bird Parts’ leads off a six-track collection that promises to dive deep into the complex emotional terrain of modern relationships and personal identity. With Piebald, Grumpy continues to explore deeply intimate experiences through genre-blurring soundscapes, bringing their unique lens to the forefront of the indie and alternative music scenes.
