Great Lake Swimmers share new single ‘Youth Not Wasted’ from upcoming album Caught Light
Toronto indie folk band Great Lake Swimmers return with news of their ninth studio album Caught Light, due out October 10 and available for pre-save now. Alongside the announcement, the group shares their wistful new single ‘Youth Not Wasted’ with a matching visualizer, and confirms an extensive Canadian and U.S. tour this fall and winter.
Led by Tony Dekker, Great Lake Swimmers recorded Caught Light deep in Ontario’s Ganaraska Forest with producer Darcy Yates (Bahamas) and engineer Jimmy Bowskill (Blue Rodeo). Drawing on early ’70s folk-pop influences like Gordon Lightfoot and John Martyn, the album was tracked in just three days, capturing a spirit of immediacy and directness.
The latest single, ‘Youth Not Wasted,’ twists Oscar Wilde’s famous phrase into a reflective folk anthem. A harmony-rich track with acoustic warmth, it unfolds like a hazy memory while taking stock of the formative power of youth.
Dekker explains:
“It suggests that every part of the adventure of youth does in fact matter, and constructs our identities in the present day. It considers the “caught light” of an old photograph, books left unread, and the points to which life’s energy ultimately pushes us. There is an element of taking stock and reflection on life lived to its fullest. It might also be a subtle homage to the early work of John Martyn, a key influence on the album, and particularly on this song.”
In support of the release, the band will embark on an extensive tour across Canada and the U.S. this fall and winter, joined by Elliott BROOD, Rita Visser, Justin Wells, and Abe Partridge on select dates.
