Brighton’s maximalist art-rockers Flip Top Head make a powerful return with their latest single ‘What I Really Want To Know,’ out now via Blitzcat Records.

Working once again with producer Theo Verney (Lime Garden, English Teacher, Blood Wizard), Flip Top Head have stripped back their orchestral flair in favor of something leaner and more emotionally direct. ‘What I Really Want To Know’ began as an experiment—to write a song under three minutes—but evolved into a captivating blend of slowcore and art rock. The track captures the band’s shift from their former maximalist sound toward a more diaristic, confessional style, showcasing both restraint and raw honesty while retaining the explosive unpredictability that defines their sound.

Lead vocalist Bowie Bartlett describes the song as deeply personal:

“It’s an old trauma dump poem, masked with heightened happiness. Taken from an almost embarrassingly long journal entry dating back to 3rd September 2022, the words had always felt too personal and far too harrowing to bring into the band. But, after a year or so of writing them – it felt cathartic to place some of the (less intense) lines into what unexpectedly turned into a (flip top) pop song.”

With ‘What I Really Want To Know,’ Flip Top Head proves that even as they pare back their sound, their emotional and artistic reach continues to expand.

We’ve covered Flip Top Head previously: ‘So Much For Mole Catching,’ and ‘Alfred Street.’
