Devarrow returns after a five-year hiatus with double single release: ‘Kickin’ and ‘In Time’ are both out now
Canadian folk singer-songwriter Devarrow makes a triumphant return to the music scene with the release of his double single, ‘Kickin’ and ‘In Time,’ out now via Paper Bag Records.
‘Kickin’ serves as a quintessential indie folk track, characterized by its gentle strumming and comforting harmonies. However, Devarrow surprises listeners by exploring non-traditional lyrical themes, adding depth and intrigue to the song.
Reflecting on the genesis of ‘Kickin,’ Devarrow shares:
“The inception of ‘Kickin’ is a bit murky, but the moment it became a full song is a strong and fond memory. The first half of the song came from some doodling in 2017 or so. I brought this to my band when we spent a long weekend demoing and workshopping songs at an old and frigid farmhouse in rural Nova Scotia … We made a demo that weekend, which almost made the cut as the final version, but perfectionism got the best of me, and I re-recorded it at my home studio in 2020.”
Accompanying ‘Kickin’ is ‘In Time,’ the first track Devarrow penned for his forthcoming project. Emerging from a meandering jam session, ‘In Time’ showcases Devarrow’s intricate layering of vocals and guitar, resulting in a uniquely compelling sound. Initially feeling like an unfinished bedroom recording, Devarrow revisited the track and found its unconventional structure to be a fitting reflection of his upcoming project’s themes and direction.
He said of the track:
“I’d admit that at first, it felt like an unfinished two-dimensional bedroom recording, but after revisiting it, I found its odd song structure to be strangely compelling, and a nice reflection of what my upcoming project would inevitably be about.”
‘Kickin’ and ‘In Time’ are both out now.
