Seattle-based singer-songwriter Dean Johnson has shared his latest single, ‘Death of the Party,’ a bittersweet meditation on social exhaustion that serves as the lead track from his upcoming Saddle Creek debut, I Hope We Can Still Be Friends.

‘Death of the Party’ showcases Johnson’s ability to blend incisive social commentary with his signature tender vocal delivery, creating what he describes as “arguably the most prickly of the album’s handful of prickish songs.” The track features brushed drums, bright acoustic chords, and expansive keys that frame Johnson’s wry observations about conversational energy vampires and social dynamics.

The song’s inspiration stems from Johnson’s years behind the bar at Al’s Tavern in Seattle’s Wallingford neighborhood, where he encountered a diverse range of characters while developing his songwriting craft. This bartending experience provided rich material for his observational lyrics and helped solidify his reputation as a local musical treasure before his wider breakthrough at age 50.

Johnson explains:

“We all know people who can’t stop talking; as though every thought is wired to their tongue. People who drain the life out of you and ruin what would have otherwise been an enjoyable party. This song is dedicated to all the energy vampires I’ve ever known.”

‘Death of the Party’ is out now. I Hope We Can Still Be Friends will be available August 22, 2025, via Saddle Creek Records.
