Ásgeir pushes forward with reflective new single ‘Against The Current’
Ásgeir releases his new single ‘Against The Current,’ out now as the latest preview of his forthcoming album Julia, due February 13, 2026 via One Little Independent Records. The Icelandic artist also shares an accompanying music video, directed by Einar Egilsson, and announces extensive headline tour dates in the UK, Europe, and North America.
‘Against The Current’ shows Ásgeir leaning into urgency and momentum, as he pairs skittering rhythms with a swelling brass arrangement by Samuel Jón Samúelsson. He builds the track patiently before it opens into a triumphant release, framing themes of self-reclamation and clarity.
He explains:
“The lyrics paint a picture of me seeing myself really for the first time. Seeing that I’ve been stuck in my ways, letting other peoples’ opinions of me change who I am and wanting to break from that pattern. To not let anyone, including myself, put me in a box and not limit my potential through what ideas someone might have of me. Realising that there’s many versions of me that need to shine as well. I could start a black metal band tomorrow if I wanted to.”
