Cass McCombs and Chris Cohen explore dignity and madness on new collaborative 7-inch
Cass McCombs and Chris Cohen have released a new collaborative 7-inch featuring the tracks ‘Steel Reserve’ and ‘Ignis Fatuus, Hinkypunk, Sharkfins and Ambergris’ through the labels Hardly Art and Domino.
The two new tracks showcase a twenty-year creative partnership. ‘Steel Reserve’ features McCombs on classical guitar with lyrics he wrote, set to music composed by Cohen. The track meditates on dignity and explores isolated lives. The second track, ‘Ignis Fatuus, Hinkypunk, Sharkfins and Ambergris,’ is their first true duet, with the artists alternating verses and harmonizing. Its lyrics are adapted from W.B. Yeats and set to a musical arrangement Cohen composed in response to McCombs’ complex song structures.
McCombs states:
“Chris composed the music, and I did the words… Both songs are somewhat cracked meditations on dignity. ‘Steel Reserve’ explores the bushes, hidden away. Public life has nothing to offer dignity. ‘Ignis Fatuus’ is a pirate’s treasure collected from an Earth stained with blood and madness — stolen from W.B. Yeats.”
The collaborative 7-inch is now available on streaming platforms.
