PREMIERE: Pete Fij dives into espionage on new single ‘Cuckoo’
Pete Fij releases his new single and video ‘Cuckoo.’ The new single is out February 10th on DSPs, with an accompanying video available to stream on YouTube.
‘Cuckoo’ leans into a dark, synth-driven post-punk and new wave palette, drawing heavily from the shadowy aesthetics of Cold War-era espionage. Built around a driving, nocturnal groove, the track blends icy electronics with sharp melodic hooks, creating a cinematic atmosphere that mirrors its lyrical construction. The song’s lyrics are composed largely of espionage terminology, gradually rearranged and distorted as the track unfolds, forming a coded narrative that blurs meaning and intent. The result is a tightly focused single that feels both referential and abstract, grounded in mood rather than linear storytelling.
Fij says:
“I’m a cold war kid, whose parents escaped from behind the Iron Curtain (my dad was sent to Siberia by the Soviets but managed to escape through Afghanistan, whilst my mum used forged papers to slip over the western border to escape from Communist Poland), and perhaps it’s this background that has led to my fascination with the murky world of espionage……..One of my favourite films of recent times is David Leitch’s 2017 spy thriller ‘Atomic Blonde’ with Charlize Theron kicking traitors’ butts in late 80’s neon-lit Berlin.
“‘Cuckoo’ is my take on the spirit of that film, with Siouxie Sioux driving the getaway car as Phil Oakey from The Human League aims a nighttime telescopic viewfinder. The lyrics are made up predominantly of espionage terms, though as the song progresses, they get mixed up to create their own code.”
‘Cuckoo’ is available now on all streaming platforms.
