La Peste unearth punk history with ‘Acid Test’
La Peste shares the previously unreleased track ‘Acid Test,’ out now, offering a first listen to material from the upcoming compilation I Don’t Know Right From Wrong: Lost La Peste 1976–1979 Vol. 1, due April 17 via Wharf Cat Records.
Built around a minimal structure, ‘Acid Test’ is driven by a relentless bass line, sharp guitar work, and pounding drums, reflecting the band’s raw approach during their late-1970s peak. The recording dates back to the same era as their sole official single, 1978’s ‘Better Off Dead,’ and reinforces why the band earned a reputation as Boston’s first true punk group. The release is accompanied by a video combining live footage shot by Jan Crocker and the MIT film crew with the original studio recording.
La Peste’s Mark Karl says of the single:
“‘Acid Test’ is two-chord magic. Two meanings. A relentless bass line, angry guitar and pounding drums. Perfect arrangement for a trio. Peter’s lyrics were right on – most of us can relate to a relationship gone sour. Begins simply and then quickly builds in intensity. The live performance of this song always carried the crowd into a controlled frenzy.”
‘Acid Test’ is available now to stream, with the full compilation arriving April 17.
