José González releases his new single ‘Against The Dying Of The Light,’ out now via Mute Records in the US and Canada and City Slang for the rest of the world. The track arrives today, January 13, 2026, alongside an official music video directed by Fredrik Egerstrand, and marks the first preview of his forthcoming fifth studio album of the same name.

Sweden-based singer-songwriter and guitarist José González presents ‘Against The Dying Of The Light’ as a contemplative, acoustic-led piece rooted in his distinctive finger-picking guitar style and understated vocal delivery. The song reflects on humanity’s present moment, examining how cultural narratives, technological progress, and ethical decision-making shape modern life. Musically restrained and lyrically direct, the single continues González’s long-standing approach of pairing intimate arrangements with expansive philosophical themes.

Speaking about the track, González says:

“‘Against The Dying Of The Light’ is a song reflecting on humanity in 2025. It’s about accepting who we are and what led us here, since the past can’t be changed. Then, about refocusing our attention on the challenges ahead, like pervert incentives and algorithms that aren’t in line with human flourishing. Even though natural selection led us here, we don’t have to do what is in the gene’s best interest. And even though cultural evolution led to our societies, we don’t have to keep all the narratives if they drag us down. And even though we have enormous opportunities with new technology that can eventually design and copy itself, we don’t have to build it right away if it has the potential to make us obsolete. We can rebel against these replicators, rebel against the dying of the light.”

‘Against The Dying Of The Light’ is available now to stream on all major platforms.
