REX pushes into dark-pop territory with new single ‘Broken’

Melbourne experimental-pop artist REX releases her new single ‘Broken’ today, out now via APOLLO Distribution. The emerging Australian songwriter continues to expand her genre-blending style with a track that fuses alternative pop, industrial tension, and electronic elements into a stark, emotionally charged statement.
On ‘Broken,’ REX leans into heavier textures and sharpened dynamics, weaving metal-tinged production with brooding pop melodies. The single explores the darker pressures shaping young men today, using abrasive synths, shadowy atmospheres, and a tense rhythmic pulse to reflect the song’s themes. The production deliberately shifts her sound away from clean pop toward a grittier, mixed-genre direction.
Speaking about the track’s inspiration, REX says:
“I wrote this song after watching the Netflix series “Adolescence”; which highlights the “red pilling” of young men in our society. I wrote “broken” from the perspective of a desperate mother, sister, teacher etc who feels the need to place responsibility on someone for the behaviour of a young man in their life. I’ve added some metal elements to the production of this song not only to convey the intensity of the emotion attached to the lyrics, but to manoeuvre REX away from clean classic pop, into a darker and grungier, mixed- genre pop.”
‘Broken’ is available now on all streaming platforms.
