Lathe of Heaven explores existential loops on new single ‘Oblivion’
Brooklyn post-punk band Lathe of Heaven unveil ‘Oblivion,’ the second single from their upcoming album Aurora, due out August 29 via Sacred Bones.
Sonically sharp and thematically surreal, ‘Oblivion’ fuses jittery percussion with gleaming guitar lines as frontperson Gage Allison meditates on consciousness and disassociation. The song explores the phenomenon of semantic satiation—how repetition can dissolve meaning—against a choppy, darkwave-laced backdrop. Allison’s vocals cycle through mantras like “Cascade – Familiar and strange – Stirring behind your eyes,” creating a hypnotic, reflective haze.
“Say a word enough times and it begins to lose meaning. This is a phenomenon called semantic satiation and it is the underlying inspiration behind this song. One day I hope to publish a short story about a drug that, when taken in front of a mirror, triggers a sort of feedback loop which multiplies the users’ sense of self out of existence… Let’s just say these lyrics are a prequel to this future project.”
Lathe of Heaven will take Aurora on tour this fall, with newly announced North American and European dates. Highlights include performances in Montreal, Chicago, Joshua Tree, Berlin, and Paris, as well as appearances at the Improved Sequences Festival and Greetings From Barcelona Festival.
