Flowers For The Dead share slow-burning single ‘Perfect View’ ahead of First Place EP

Flowers For The Dead have released their poignant new single ‘Perfect View,’ accompanied by a self-directed video and arriving just days before their upcoming EP First Place drops this Friday.
‘Perfect View’ marks a shift in sound and sentiment for the D.C.-based trio. What began as a simple love song soon took a more introspective turn, addressing feelings of isolation and the need for connection within a community. “We wanted to convey that same emotion within the video, so we dressed our friends up as mimes and had them act out a love story,” explains singer/guitarist Jessie Szegö. “It was also my first time directing and editing a video of ours fully by myself, which was a blast and I hope to do more in the future!”
The track is the first taste of First Place, a four-song EP recorded with producer Justin Pizzoferrato (Dinosaur Jr., Sasami, Wild Pink). It follows their 2024 full-length Magnolia and captures the band—Szegö, bassist Ella Buskirk, and drummer Ten Bears—leaning into a more restrained, intimate palette. While Magnolia explored heavier sonic terrain, First Place scales back the noise in favor of clarity and emotion. The title itself nods to a vintage “1st prize big shot” pin, echoing the EP’s dry humor and themes of self-awareness, community, and subtle defiance.
The band is currently on tour, with their next show scheduled for July 29 in Asheville, NC. They’ll celebrate the release of First Place with a hometown EP release show on August 1 at Comet Ping Pong in Washington, D.C.
