Railing and reeling, hierarchies are torn at by Manchester’s order-baiting live phenomenon, Martial Arts, on their latest release, ‘Defector.’

Released on Akoustik Anarkhy, ‘Defector’ is the second single from Martial Arts, a band that obsessively places sound within a delineated order, pushing their artistry to an enlightened level. This new track sees the five-piece delve into a restless commitment to ‘playing the studio’ like the stage, creating an incessant, experimental new-wave/post-punk nearly-pop sound. Capturing the band’s unique style, the song blends dream-encroaching riffs and an unwavering will to fight rather than fade.

Singer and co-songwriter, James Marson says:

“‘Defector’ is about the introspective struggle, helplessness, and feelings of responsibility towards the disparity that our generation is faced with. Knowing that you have the potential to benefit others, but not knowing how to, and this creates frustration due to deception in the society we exist in.

“We’re trying to build ourselves a platform to be heard with an emphasis on positive change instead of self-indulgence, despite the world itself feeling selfish. This encapsulates the motive behind not only the track itself but also us as a collective.”

‘Defector’ is out now. For updates on Martial Arts’ live dates and release plans, follow them on Instagram and X.
