In recent years, Davies has garnered praise for composing scores for films and TV shows, collaborating with renowned figures like John Carpenter.

Acclaimed composer of atmospheric, synth-heavy instrumental music, Daniel Davies, has announced his upcoming album Ghost of the Heart, scheduled for release on June 21, 2024, via Sacred Bones. The lead single, ‘I Know Why,’ showcases this fusion beautifully, combining riff-led melodies with brooding atmospherics. Davies drew inspiration from a real-life moment on Halloween night, crafting a narrative of isolation and loneliness.

Reflecting on track, Davies shares:

“I wrote ‘I Know Why’ on Halloween night. We were trick-or-treating, and I could see this girl walking into the darkness and disappear. I liked the image and the feeling that it gave me. It evolved from there and became a song about isolation and loneliness.”

Recorded throughout 2023 with producer John Spiker, Davies’ longtime collaborator, Ghost of the Heart features contributions from Matt Flynn on drums and Spiker on bass, with Davies handling all other instrumentation. For Davies, the album represents a return to his rock roots while incorporating the lessons learned from his experiences in the film world. It’s a career-defining work that showcases his evolution as a musician and sets the stage for his future endeavors.

“Writing a rock album is an expression on how the artist feels while scoring a film involves creating soundscapes to complement someone else’s story,” Davies says. “With this album, I wanted to merge the heavy guitar riffs from my rock days with the atmospheric synth sounds I’ve been experimenting with as a composer.”

Fans can look forward to the release of Ghost of the Heart on June 21, 2024, via Sacred Bones. In the meantime, ‘I Know Why’ is out now.
