There’s so much good music out in the ether that sometimes it’s difficult to parse through all of it. Every week The Daily Music Report will do the hard work for you and highlight the best releases available on streaming services.

This week we’re highlighting new music from The National, CHAI, and Meltt.

The National – Laugh Track

The National’s latest release, Laugh Track, unveiled on September 18, 2023, marks their tenth studio album and the latter part of a dual album initiated by First Two Pages of Frankenstein in April 2023. In a departure from the tone of the initial installment, Laugh Track embodies a more subdued and contemplative essence. Delving into themes of loss, grief, and solitude, the album also offers glimpses of optimism and resilience amid life’s challenges. Notably, the eponymous track features a compelling duet with Phoebe Bridgers, encapsulating a poignant exploration of life’s absurdity and our methods of navigating through loss. Guest appearances by Rosanne Cash and Bon Iver further enrich the album’s musical landscape.

Standout Songs: Alphabet City, Deep End (Paul’s in Pieces), Weird Goodbyes (feat. Bon Iver), Space Invader, Crumble (feat. Rosanne Cash)

CHAI – CHAI

CHAI’s latest, their eponymous offering released via Sub Pop, marks a significant musical journey. In a departure from their previous processes, the band crafted this album while on tour, channeling their experiences as Japanese women into their poignant lyrics. The recording sessions took place between shows at studios located in vibrant cities like L.A., Mexico City, and New York City. Vocalist and keyboardist MANA emphasized that this album mirrors their evolving journey, while producer Ryu Takahashi highlighted their artistic ambition to intertwine their Japanese identity with a Western perspective, resulting in a truly unique fusion.

Meltt – Eternal Embers

Meltt has released their follow-up to 2019’s Swim Slowly. Released on September 23, Eternal Embers is their second album and is composed of 14 dreamy and atmospheric songs that explore love, loss, and resilience. Here’s drummer Jamie Turner discussing the album, “We want you to go on a journey with this album. Even though we deal with darker themes, it ends on a positive note. I’d like for you to have this big cinematic ride but end in a positive place. There’s always light at the end.”
