There’s so much good music out in the ether that sometimes it’s difficult to parse through all of it. Every week The Daily Music Report will do the hard work for you and highlight the best releases available on streaming services.

This week we’re highlighting new music from Skullcrusher, Bill Callahan, and Plains.

Skullcrusher – Quiet the Room

Skullcrusher’s (Helen Ballentine) first full-length album Quiet The Room is an eclectic blend of electronic, ambient, folk, and rock that is as complex as it is simple. “We wanted every song to have that little twinkle, but also a sense of crumbling,” she continues, “Whatever fits together…” And it all fits together so effortlessly. Written in the summer of 2021, the album covers 14 tracks that were recorded at Chicken Shack Studios in upstate New York where Ballentine grew up.

Bill Callahan – YTI⅃AƎЯ

56-year-old Bill Callahan has returned yet again for his ninth solo album (and 23rd overall if you include Smog). The Drag City standout’s latest effort, YTI⅃AƎЯ continues along the path that he has forged over the last 30 years. Over that time, the master songwriter has learned how to evoke any reaction he deems worthy of your attention. And on YTI⅃AƎЯ, Callahan leans on the melancholic, moody, and wistful emotions that he’s pulled from since his early days. This album is deserving of your time.

Plains – I Walked With You a Ways

The new project from Jess Williamson and Waxahatchee’s Katie Crutchfield is an enterprise filled with chemistry, creativity, and a clear path forward. The interaction between the two women is as if they have been making music together for years. What sets this album apart is the duo’s harmonies throughout the 30-minute project. Release via ANTI- the project should act as a template for future artists on how to successfully work together and navigate a project of this magnitude.
