There’s so much good music out in the ether that sometimes it’s difficult to parse through all of it. Every week The Daily Music Report will do the hard work for you and highlight the best releases available on streaming services.

This week we’re highlighting new music from Vampire Weekend, Phosphorescent, and GloRilla.

Vampire Weekend – Only God Was Above Us

Vampire Weekend has returned with their first full-length album since 2019’s Father of the Bride. Only God Was Above Us represents not only a reflection on their past themes and successes but also a resurrection of some of the distinctive sounds abandoned on Father of the Bride. Marking their fifth studio release, Only God Was Above Us also signifies a significant transition for the band, as it is the first recorded without founding member Rostam Batmanglij, who departed in 2016.

Standout Songs: Classical, Capricorn, Prep-School Gangsters, Gen-X Boone, Mary Boone

Phosphorescent – Revelator

Phosphorescent’s highly anticipated album, Revelator, marks their debut on Verve Records and their first studio release in six years since 2018’s C’est La Vie. Recorded over six months at his Nashville studio, frontman Matthew Houck describes Revelator as his finest work yet, delving into themes of home, partnership, and family, exploring the unspoken truths that accompany these aspects of life. With contributions from esteemed musicians such as Jack Lawrence of the Raconteurs, Jim White of Dirty Three, and Houck’s partner Jo Schornikow, the album embodies a rich tapestry of sound and emotion. Notably, Revelator features the first song in Phosphorescent’s history not penned by Houck, showcasing the band’s evolution and willingness to embrace new creative avenues.
