This week we’re highlighting new music from Earl Sweatshirt, FKA Twigs, and Bonobo.

Earl Sweatshirt – Sick!

Earl Sweatshirt is back with his latest, Sick!. In his first in since his Feet of Clay project from November 2019, the Santa Monica rapper, songwriter, and record producer chose to reflect what was happening around him. “A wise man said art imitates life,” Sweatshirt said in press materials. “People were sick. I leaned into the chaos cause it was apparent that it wasn’t going anywhere. These songs are what happened when I would come up for air.” The album features Zelooperz and Armand Hammer, as well as production from the Alchemist, Black Noi$e, Navy Blue, Samiyam, Alexander Spit, Theravada, Rob Chambers, and Earl himself. He has referred to the album as his “humble offering of 10 songs recorded in the wake of the worldwide coronavirus pandemic and its subsequent lockdowns.”

Standout Songs: 2010, Sick!, Tabula Rasa (feat. Armand Hammer), Titanic

FKA twigs – CAPRISONGS

Most mixtapes come with a lot less baggage and expectations than full-length albums. And CAPRISONGS is no different. It’s a collection of tracks that sees FKA twigs work on perfecting her craft with a myriad of friends. She’s referred to is as her “journey back to [herself] through [her] amazing collaborators and friends.” And quite a list of friends she has: The Weeknd, Shygirl, Rema, and Pa Salieu all featured in the 48 minutes therein… The mixtape was executive produced by FKA twigs and El Guincho with additional production credits going to Koreless, Mike Dean, Arca, Warren Ellis, Sega Bodega, and others. Sonically, the 17 songs come as a change of pace from previous recordings. In this collection FKA twigs maneuvers through a more pop-forward and light-hearted sound than her full length predecessors (Magdalene and LP1). Overall, it’s a solid collection of tracks from one of the leading ladies in music today.

Standout Songs: meta angel, tears in the club (feat. the weeknd), papi bones (feat. shygirl), careless (feat. daniel caesar), darjeeling (feat jorja smith & unknown t)

Bonobo – Fragments

We’ve had to wait 4 agonizing years for another Bonobo record, but the time has come. Fragments is finally here. The seventh full-length release for British electronic artist Simon Green has finally been delivered. And what an album it is. From the opening track, ‘Polyghost’ to the closer, ‘Day By Day’ Bonobo does not disappoint. For an electronic album, it is well pieced together. Although many of the tracks have been previously released (5 of the 12), the album feels fresh and new. Fragments features guest appearances from Miguel Atwood-Ferguson, Kadhja Bonet, Joji, O’Flynn, Jordan Rakei, and Jamila Woods. The album deserves repeat listens with each subsequent listen pulling you in further and further into Bonobo’s world until it digs into your unconsciousness. The artist explains best what’s behind the album in his Spotify bio, “Fragments is the sound of both struggle and isolation — personally and collectively — and of a surging, joyous return: a gorgeous reminder of how out of such trials, creativity and hope can emerge at the most unexpected moments.”

Standout Songs: Shadows, Otomo, Tides, From You, Sapien
