Tennis says goodbye with Face Down In The Garden

Tennis closes a beloved chapter with their final studio album, Face Down In The Garden, due April 25 via their own label, Mutually Detrimental.
Produced by: Patrick Riley and Alaina Moore
The album arrives as a career-capping milestone for the indie-pop duo of Alaina Moore and Patrick Riley, who recorded and produced the project in their Denver home studio. As the seventh and final album from Tennis, Face Down In The Garden spans their signature palette—Brill Building pop, synth-laced dreaminess, and indie rock—while also pushing beyond it with arrangements that are both familiar and refreshingly unconventional. From the delicate shimmer of ‘At The Wedding’ to the sweeping emotion of ‘Weight of Desire,’ the record distills fifteen years of touring, marriage, and collaboration into their most assured and expansive work yet.
The recently released single, ’12 Blown Tires,’ offers a snapshot of life on the road and the wear-and-tear of years spent in motion. Its lyrics were sparked during a tour breakdown on I-40, with Moore recalling, “That particular stretch of highway was a tire graveyard.” The song became a reflection of both their travels and their shared life, entwined by love and relentless movement.
“When we recorded ’12 Blown Tires’ a few months later, I had the sense of distilling the past 15 years into four minutes of music,” says Moore. “It felt like the end of something, though I wasn’t sure what… After finishing Face Down In The Garden, it became clear that we had said everything we wanted to say and achieved everything we wanted to achieve with our band. This will be our last studio album, at least in this configuration as Tennis. We are ready to pursue other creative projects and to make space in our lives for new things.”
Tennis will celebrate Face Down In The Garden with a farewell headline tour beginning May 16 in Las Vegas. Fans can also look forward to a new EP of previously unheard tracks, Neutral Poetry: First Recordings, Unreleased Demos 2009-2010, arriving May 16 and offering an intimate look at the duo’s earliest creations.
