Shower Curtain’s words from a wishing well delivers distortion-soaked reflections on early adulthood
New York-based quartet Shower Curtain makes a strong debut with words from a wishing well—a record that captures the turbulent experiences of early adulthood through layers of sludgy distortion and thoughtful lyricism.
Produced by: Victoria Winter and Ethan Williams
Fronted by Brazilian-American artist Victoria Winter, alongside Ethan Williams (Punchlove), Sean Terrell (Fasting), and Cody Hudgins (Crate), the band self-produced the album, which weaves together themes of grief, intuition, and existential contemplation. Winter’s lyrics, written during her early years in New York City, navigate the delicate balance between personal insight and the overwhelming presence of the universe, creating a meditative yet chaotic soundscape.
Tracks like ‘benadryl man’ and ‘wish u well’ serve as prime examples of the band’s ability to channel raw emotion through thick guitar tones and heavy reverb. The swirling soundscapes are at times disorienting, as the tracks move between moments of introspection and eruptions of noise, all while maintaining a grounding sense of melody.
“If one wishes into a wishing well, I’d like to believe that there is a reason why that wish would or wouldn’t come true,” Winter says of the album’s title, which reflects her search for spiritual guidance in life and music. “words from a wishing well speaks to the return of that wish from the universe.”
words from a wishing well is out now via via Angel Tapes and Fire Talk Records and blends 90s shoegaze and grunge influences, creating a sound that resonates with both nostalgia and fresh perspective.
