L.A. Witch embrace gothic and post-punk influences on DOGGOD

L.A. Witch return with their most expansive and sonically adventurous album to date, DOGGOD, out now on Suicide Squeeze Records.
Produced by: Sade Sanchez
Since their debut, L.A. Witch have thrived on a raw and seductive blend of garage rock, Americana noir, and psych-tinged reverb. With their latest release, DOGGOD, the trio—Sade Sanchez (guitar/vocals), Irita Pai (bass), and Ellie English (drums)—venture further into brooding post-punk and gothic soundscapes while retaining the hazy allure that defines their music. Opting to record at Motorbass Studio in Paris, the band embraces a darker, more atmospheric aesthetic, channeling the forlorn minimalism of Joy Division and early The Cure.
Thematically, DOGGOD is a meditation on love, devotion, and subservience, reflected in the album’s palindrome title, which merges the concepts of DOG and GOD. Standout tracks like ‘Icicle’ and ‘Kiss Me Deep’ capture the melancholic tension between passion and sacrifice, setting hypnotic basslines and shimmering guitars against Sanchez’s spectral vocals. The lead single, ‘777,’ pulses with an urgent, fatalistic energy, balancing driving distortion with dreamlike melodies. Meanwhile, ‘I Hunt You Pray’ immerses listeners in a nocturnal, krautrock-inspired groove, illustrating a world where love is both predatory and loyal.
Sanchez explains:
“There’s a willingness to die for love in the process of serving it or suffering for it or in search of it… just in the way a loyal, devoted servant dog would. There is this symbolic connection between women and dogs that expresses women’s subordinate position in society. And anything that embodies such divine characteristics never deserved to be a word used as an insult.”
With DOGGOD, L.A. Witch refine their sound while expanding their creative horizons. The album bridges the past and present, fusing gothic textures with their established garage-rock roots. It’s a bold step forward, offering an evocative and immersive journey into themes of devotion, love, and submission.
