Grumpy’s Wolfed EP fuses raw intimacy with playful introspection

The six-track EP is a whirlwind of emotional depth, humor, and vulnerability, encapsulating the band’s unique ability to turn personal chaos into art.
Produced by: Heaven Schmitt
Recorded in a Chicago home studio over ten intense days, Wolfed came together just after Heaven Schmitt and drummer Austin Hans Seegers made the difficult decision to get divorced. Despite the personal upheaval, the EP is vibrant and confident, blending playful electronic beats, AutoTuned vocals, and cheeky lyrics.
As you may have guessed, Schmitt’s personal life, including close relationships with their bandmates, heavily influences Grumpy’s sound. The lineup includes ex-girlfriends on keys and bass and an ex-husband on drums. This close-knit collaboration adds an extra layer of authenticity to the music. As Schmitt explains, “I’m really drawn to people who — no matter what they’re going through, or what we’re going through — have a clear baseline of respect and care and love.”
Throughout Wolfed, Grumpy embraces imperfections, with lyrics that mix goofy introspection with raw emotional honesty. Songs like ‘Flower’ and ‘Holding’ demonstrate Schmitt’s willingness to wear their heart on their sleeve, whether reflecting on love’s complexities or confessing uncomfortable truths. The EP’s closing track, ‘Mandarin Allemande,’ offers a quieter, more introspective ending, leaving listeners with a sense of closure and reflection.
In Wolfed, Grumpy has created a project that is as self-assured as it is vulnerable. With its mix of sonic tension, dark humor, and earnest emotion, the EP marks a significant step forward for the band, solidifying their place in the Brooklyn music scene.
