bug crush captures the feeling of moving nowhere fast on new EP, Somehow I Go In Circles All The Time

NYC-based artist bug crush, the project of Carolyn Fahrner, returns with a four-track EP titled Somehow I Go In Circles All The Time, out May 16 via self-release.
Produced by: Oli Deakin
Blending indie folk rock with a dreamy slowcore haze, bug crush makes music for those caught in life’s emotional loops—stuck thinking the same thoughts, revisiting the same places, and chasing meaning in everyday repetition. This EP is the result of three years, three Brooklyn apartments, and countless moments of self-doubt. Produced by Oli Deakin, it documents the restless process of coming of age, growing up, and trying to stay afloat in a city that never slows down.
The first single and opening track, ‘Mikey Told Me,’ exemplifies the record’s soft persistence and introspective tone. Written just after Carolyn’s move to Brooklyn, it draws inspiration from both real-life disorientation and imagined narratives. Anchored by a steady hook and shifting time signatures, the track grew from late-night walks and the lingering presence of a neighborhood storefront—Mikey’s Hook Up—that left an unexpected imprint.
“I wrote ‘Mikey Told Me’ right when I first moved to Brooklyn. I was living with two of my close friends in a shitty apartment. I wasn’t sleeping well because my bedroom floors were 3 inches uneven. In my groggy waking hours, I wandered around Brooklyn and frequently passed by a store called ‘Mikey’s Hook Up’. I thought it was a funny name and it stuck in my head. I wanted to write a song that wasn’t really about me, or anyone I knew, but I think it inevitably ended up being a reflection of my experiences in the world.”
Other tracks like ‘Tugboat’ dig deeper into questions of desire and self-expectation, reflecting on over-scheduling and the struggle to understand what we’re really striving toward. Throughout the EP, bug crush’s bedroom-born songwriting is brought to life by a full band—Derek Walker (guitar), Zena Sprately (bass), Justin Gibble (drums), and Felicia Rosen (vocals)—adding texture, warmth, and carefully measured chaos.
Somehow I Go In Circles All The Time invites listeners into the quiet corners of uncertainty, where small moments become reflections of something larger. For anyone who’s ever felt stuck but still hopeful, bug crush has created a home for you.
