Tim Carr unveils dreamlike new single ‘Alone Playing Piano’ ahead of album Pleasure Drives
Known for his work with Perfume Genius and Hand Habits, Tim Carr releases ‘Alone Playing Piano,’ a shimmering single from his upcoming album Pleasure Drives, out August 29th.
Out today, ‘Alone Playing Piano’ marks the second single from Carr’s forthcoming full-length Pleasure Drives, a record that emerged from a period of solitude and experimentation in a friend’s backhouse in the Crescenta Valley. Shaped by Carr’s dual affinity for lo-fi warmth and digital polish, the track captures the dreamlike atmosphere that defines the album’s sonic palette. A quiet, emotionally expansive composition, the single pairs brushed drums and sea-weathered organs with Carr’s vulnerable vocals and understated baroque textures.
Despite what its title might suggest, ‘Alone Playing Piano’ is not confined to a single instrument. The song swells with synths, electric guitar, and ambient layers, reflecting Carr’s careful attention to intimacy and emotional resonance. Longtime collaborator Gregory Uhlmann contributed guitar, effects, and synthesizer to the track, adding depth to Carr’s already multidimensional production.

The single arrives as Carr prepares to self-release Pleasure Drives on August 29th, a project that departs from his earlier folk-influenced debut The Last Day of Fighting and leans into a more cinematic, collage-like approach to pop. The new record captures the golden-hour essence of the Crescenta Valley and the internal push and pull between perfectionism and play.
