Spencer Krug, known for his work with Wolf Parade, has revived his project Sunset Rubdown, dropping the new single ‘Cliché Town’ ahead of the band’s first album in fifteen years, Always Happy to Explode, set for release on September 20th.

‘Cliché Town’ is the second single from the upcoming album and showcases Sunset Rubdown’s signature blend of indie rock, art rock, and chamber pop. Originally written in 2020 and shared on Krug’s Patreon as a demo, the song has evolved from a laptop-driven track into a full-band production. Recorded mostly live-off-the-floor, the reworked version features Krug on piano and vocals, with Camilla Wynne on keyboard and omnichord, Nicholas Merz on bass, and Jordan Robson-Cramer on drums. The song’s long, driving art rock outro is particularly notable, highlighting the collaborative effort that brought the track to life.

As Sunset Rubdown gears up for the release of Always Happy to Explode, ‘Cliché Town’ offers a promising glimpse into the creative evolution that has taken place over the past fifteen years. Fans of Krug’s work, as well as newcomers, will find much to appreciate in this dynamic and introspective track.
