Shunkan returns with a melancholic and mesmerizing new single ‘Hellbound’

Los Angeles-based rock project Shunkan has officially returned with ‘Hellbound,’ the first single from Kamikaze Girl, Marina Sakimoto’s first studio album in over five years, set for release on May 6, 2025, via Rite Field Records.
Grounded in Sakimoto’s honeyed vocals, ‘Hellbound’ drifts through hazy, melancholic textures while carrying an undercurrent of longing and uncertainty. Brightly toned guitar riffs shimmer like distant memories, weaving together a sonic landscape that is nostalgic and emotionally raw. The song encapsulates the feeling of being drawn into something that may not be good for you, yet still holding on—a sentiment that resonates deeply with the album’s overarching themes of transformation and identity.
Sakimoto says:
“I like ‘Hellbound’ as the first track of the album because it feels like the initial descent into a transformative period for me. There’s that space in your life where you start sensing something (or someone) may not be the best for you, but the allure of it keeps you around because… what else do you have to lose? Nihilism—mixed with a lost sense of identity—is one hell of a drug. Sonically, I wanted this track to reflect what I was listening to at the time, which started with revisiting the ‘Lost in Translation’ soundtrack while I was in Japan.”
‘Hellbound’ is out now.
